Mountain View Middle School in Union held the charter ceremony today with FFA Advisor Catherine Dransfield and Principal Pamela Dunford signing the chapter’s constitution. Dransfield said the FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for leadership, personal growth and career success through agriculture education. Mountain View’s student interest in the program is the reason the charter has come to fruition,” she said. “Working in our school’s greenhouse really built the initial interest. Students planned and built four 50-ft. long raised beds on their own, along with planting the strawberry plants, and watering and caring for the mums and strawberries. As a former FFA Member and WV State FFA Officer, I know the impact that the FFA can make,” Dransfield said. “It gave me the confidence to believe in myself, explore my passions and personal strengths, and pursue my dreams. Without this organization, I would not be the person I am today. Dransfield said the FFA Chapter has been two years in the making, with Dunford advocating for the program from the very beginning. Without her encouragement and support, this would not be a possibility. Ms. Dunford sees the value in this program as our community is so agriculturally rich; many students live on a farm or have some involvement with livestock and crop production. The FFA program will allow students to be proud of their roots that run deep here in Monroe County, Dransfield said. “The ear-to-ear smiles of our newly established officers speaks to the encouragement our students are already receiving from the FFA.”
